Clemson Veteran Makes Big Decision On Future With Tigers

first_img The tight end position is expected to be manned by former walk-on J.C. Chalk. Braden Galloway is listed as the co-starter there, but he is ineligible this season after being suspended due to a failed drug test ahead of last year’s College Football Playoff. He may be able to return to the post-season, but that is unclear so far.Behind them are freshmen Jaelyn Lay and Davis Allen, converted linebacker Luke Price, and Georgia Southern transfer J.L. Banks.Earlier this off-season, it was suggested that Garrett Williams could leave the program and join the military. His family has a long history of service, and Williams is recovering from a knee injury.Dabo Swinney is definitely not surprised by his absence. From The Post and Courier back in February:“He’s around this spring and is going to be out there helping us, but he’s dealing with his health issues. He’s getting his knee back right and he’s got a lot of things he’s dealing with. But he really wants to go into the military,” Swinney said, referring to Williams’ long-term goal. “Right now, he’s probably not going to be back.”[…]“Since I’ve gotten hurt, I’ve kind of gone back and forth on what I want to do,” Williams said. “I know there are positives to both.“If I could be an infantry officer, I think that would be an awesome career. It would be a cool opportunity and an honor to serve.”It’s hard to take any umbrage with that decision by Williams. It will be very interesting to see how Clemson looks to fill this pretty significant hole in the offense. A new update to the depth chart amplifies that, as it appears that veteran Garrett Williams is moving on from the program.Williams was not much of a receiving threat for the Tigers, but was a solid blocker. If he was set to play this fall, he was probably set up for a big role in the offense.Instead, it looks like his football days are behind him.
