first_img 2 FIFA condemned the 57-year-old, who is an ambassador for their ‘Legends’ initiative, describing his comments as ‘inappropriate’ and ‘unfounded’.Maradona said on social media: “I said a couple of things and, I admit, some of them are unacceptable.“I have absolute respect for the work – which is not easy – that the institution and the referees do.”Maradona originally claimed the referee was bias towards England and thought it was FIFA who should be doing the apologising. He said on Argentine TV: “I saw a monumental theft.“It is the man who decides who the referee is who is to blame. A man like that (Geiger) should not be put in charge of a game of that magnitude.“With all due respect, Pierluigi Collina, as the man who designates the referees, he is very bad. He must apologise to the Colombian people.“I told Infantino that if I worked for FIFA I would change everything. It has to be transparent. That’s why I didn’t go there.“The referee (an American) will know a lot about baseball, but he has no idea about football.” FIFA responded in a statement: “FIFA strongly rebukes the criticism of the performance of the match officials which it considers to have been positive in a tough and highly emotional match.“It also considers the additional comments and insinuations made as being entirely inappropriate and completely unfounded.“At a time when FIFA is doing everything within its power to ensure principles of fair play, integrity and respect are at the forefront of this World Cup and how the organisation is now run, FIFA is extremely sorry to read such declarations from a player who has written the history of our game.” 2 Join talkSPORT for LIVE commentary of England v Sweden in the World Cup quarter-finals – Saturday, July 7: KICK-OFF 3PM BSTcenter_img Maradona has an ambassadorial role at FIFA Diego Maradona has apologised to FIFA after blaming world football’s governing body for Colombia’s World Cup defeat to England. The Argentina legend accused the Three Lions of theft and slammed the performance of referee Mark Geiger.
