Steinhaus’ first Bundesliga match has yet to be announced, but she oversaw Bayern Munich’s 5-0 win at minnows Chemnitz last Saturday in the first-round of the German Cup and proved she can handle star players. She gave Bayern’s Franck Ribery a playful punch on the arm after the French winger cheekily untied her boot laces before a free-kick.“She’s strong, she has a lot of power,” said Ribery.“It was funny, she played along and was in good spirits.“You can have fun with referees, but it’s also important that there’s mutual respect.”Steinhaus says her promotion to the Bundesliga is a “great incentive” and reward for her hard work, but shuns her role as a trailblazer.“I never planned, and still don’t today, to break new grounds of emancipation,” she said at a referee’s training camp in July.“I am only doing what I love.”Steinhaus has taken charge of around 80 German second division matches since 2011, refereeing the women’s final at the London Olympic Games tournament and this year’s women’s Champions League final. She has already acted as the fourth official in Germany’s top tier and shrugged off Pep Guardiola’s attempt to put his arm around her shoulders when the then-Bayern coach remonstrated with her on the touchlines in 2014.Unfortunately, the 1.81m Steinhaus has already experienced direct sexism on the pitch.During a second division match in 2015, she sent off Hoffenheim’s Germany international Kerem Demirbay, then playing for Fortuna Duesseldorf, who told her women had no place in football. The remark led to him receiving a five-match ban by the German FA.Steinhaus, who works with a fitness coach, acknowledges that refereeing in the Bundesliga will challenge her both on and off the pitch.“I like to say that the Bundesliga is another step up, I have worked intensively and the speed is different,” said Steinhaus.“Certainly, as a female referee, I will be under special scrutiny from the start of the season, especially from the media.“I don’t seek public attention and my colleagues know me well enough to know that.”Steinhaus is a policewoman and in a relationship with English former top ref Howard Webb. She can expect to have her decisions scrutinised by fans in football-mad Germany.Claudia Neumann, Germany’s first female commentator, experienced a sexist backlash on social media when she took the microphone for state broadcaster ZDF during last year’s European championships.“In football, which is the favourite child of German men, changes are about as welcome as an annoying bout of diarrhoea,” Neumann told SID, an AFP subsidiary.A survey by Loughborough University has found only 3.7 percent of senior positions in European football are occupied by women.Even in women’s football, 10 of the 12 teams in Germany’s top flight are coached by men.Nevertheless, Steinhaus is relishing her chance to make history by blowing her whistle in the Bundesliga.“It has always been my dream and I am delighted that it will come true,” she said.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)
Andy Murray became the first British man to win a Grand Slam men’s singles title in 76 years after defeating Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in five gruelling sets in the US Open final. After losing four Grand Slam finals, the Scotsman at last won a major title by battling it out in blustery conditions at Arthur Ashe Stadium 7-6, 7-5, 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, here at Flushing Meadows on Monday. It looked as if Murray had the measure of the windy conditions as he took the first two sets before Djokovic came back roaring to take the next two.The Briton quickly regained his equanimity in the deciding set and jumped into a 3-0 lead pulling on his reserve stamina by breaking the Serb’s serve twice. Then and there the Serb’s fight was over and the Briton raced to take the set and the match.Djokovic thus failed to become the first to defend the title at the US Open since the five straight wins by Federer (2004-2008), reports Xinhua. The last British male champion to win a Grand Slam title was Fred Perry, who claimed the US Open in 1936.Murray, 25, had an extra day’s rest than his opponent as Djokovic’s semifinal against David Ferrer was postponed to Sunday. The Serb had to play two matches in two days and that gave Murray the edge over the defending champion, especially in the fifth set.The defeat cost Djokovic heavy. Had he won he would have collected $2.9 million payout instead of the $1.45 million runner-up cheque as he would have pocketed $1 million bonus for leading the US Open series.Murray earned $1.9 million, bringing his career prize money to more than $23 million.Djokovic, 25, was the 2-5 favourite at the Las Vegas Hotel’s Super Book, translating to a 71 percent probability of a sixth major title. A successful $100 dollars bet on underdog Murray yielded a 210-dollar profit. The win also broke a stranglehold on major titles by Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Djokovic, who combined to win 29 of the previous 30. Juan Martin Del Potro’s 2009 US Open victory was the lone exception.Murray’s breakthrough came in his 28th Grand Slam event and after losing four finals. He lost the 2011 Australian Open final to Djokovic and was beaten by Federer in three others — at the 2008 U.S. Open, in Australia in 2010 and this year at Wimbledon. There were four service breaks in the first eight games of the opening set as the players tried to adjust to the swirling 26 kph wind.Playing tentatively instead of going for winners, the two men exchanged 54 strokes on one point in the sixth game of the 87-minute set. The tie-breaker lasted 24 minutes. After Murray won the first-set tie-breaker on his sixth set point, he took a 4-0 lead in the second set by breaking Djokovic’s serve twice.Djokovic stormed back to win five of the next six games, only to have Murray break his serve again in the 12th game to win the set.Djokovic rallied to clinch the next two sets to stay alive and revive hopes of defending the title. But Murray repeated what he did in the second set by breaking the Serb’s first two service games, establishing a 3-0 lead.Though Djokovic broke one back in the fourth game, but could not hold off the sliding and was broken for the ninth time in the match in the seventh game to lose. With the win, Murray, who took the gold medal at the London Games in July, also became the first man to win both a gold medal and the US Open title since tennis returned to the Olympics in 1988.Murray called the three-set Olympic gold medal-winning victory against Federer “the biggest win of my life.”Now Murray has a Grand Slam as well, moving past Nadal to become the ATP World Tour’s third-ranked player.advertisement

Kolkata: The state Education department on Thursday shortened the duration of summer holidays in state schools and announced that classes in both primary and secondary schools will commence from June 10.A notification in this regard was brought out by the department after state Education minister Partha Chatterjee posted on his Facebook page earlier in the day that schools will open from June 10. The earlier notification of the department had declared summer holidays till June 30. It may be mentioned that Chatterjee had held a meeting with the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and other concerned officials on Tuesday and had said that the decision to have summer holidays in schools till June 30 was being reviewed. He had said that he would also speak with the weather office and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, before bringing out any fresh notification in this regard. There have been requests from students, a section of teachers as well as guardians to reconsider the decision of closure of schools till June 30. It was May 3 when the Education department had issued a notification declaring that all government, government-sponsored and non-government aided schools in the state will remain closed on May 3 and May 4 due to the predicted severe cyclonic storm Fani. It had further stated that all these schools will also remain closed from May 6 to May 20 until commencement of summer vacation, due to the prevailing heat wave. It had added that schools will remain closed till June 30 due to anticipated extreme weather conditions.
