The effectiveness of mobile advertising is still being debated, but media buyers are already going all-in while also increasing their presence on the Web.Mobile ad spending grew 180 percent to top $4 billion in 2012, according to the latest estimates from digital marketing research firm eMarketer. At the same time, the Interactive Advertising Bureau and PwC US report Internet ad revenues totaled $9.3 billion for the third quarter.See Also: AAM Data: Mobile and Digital Monetization Expected to Rise On the mobile side, eMarketer highlights this year’s exponential growth as an outlier–the expected growth rate for 2013 is a comparatively meager 77 percent, and it slows from there–but predicts the market will surpass $20 billion by 2016.Google is still the mobile-ad king with more than $2.1 billion in revenue and 57 percent market share, but others are closing the gap.Facebook–who only began offering mobile-specific advertising via “Sponsored Stories” mid-way through this year–was the second-largest seller with an expected haul of $339 million for 2012. Mobile earnings estimates for the social giant were as low as $45 million earlier this year. Facebook had no reported mobile ad earnings in 2011.Twitter, also showing no mobile ad revenue in 2011, was this year’s fourth-largest earner with $135 million.Internet Ad Revenues Grow 18 Percent in Q3While mobile was exploding, Internet ad spending continued its steady climb through the third quarter. The sector grew 18 percent year-over-year and 6 percent from the second quarter to reach $9.3 billion.”Sustained growth in internet ad revenue despite economic head winds is a testament to the value marketers get from using digital media,” says Sherrill Mane, SVP of research, analytics and measurement for IAB, in a statement. Each publisher has approached tablets at its own pace, with its own purpose. The result has left a scattered set of protocols across the industry. The International Digital Enterprise Alliance (IDEAlliance), an association serving players across the digital media supply chain, is attempting to simplify the process of tablet issue production by eliminating many of the competing formats and workflows. The goal is an industry standard called OpenEFT—guidelines to direct the packaging, delivery and display of digital magazines for everyone in the ecosystem. OpenEFT’s final draft was unveiled late last month.“We, as publishers, would like to be able to provide a designed-for-tablet, interactive edition to all the newsstands,” says Sean Keefe, executive director of publishing technology for Hearst Magazines. “But right now, not all of them take the same file formats.”The benefits for publishers are two-fold. Tablet issue production would become a more efficient process, while the barriers to third-party innovation would be lowered. Tablet issue production can be convoluted now. Hearst currently produces up to three formats (and several variants) of its magazines, depending on the brand and the newsstand they’re working with; Next Issue Media, a digital newsstand, is forced to adapt about six formats for its storefront. Many of those conversions are labor intensive and require quality assurance testing at multiple points.Ideally, says Keith Barraclough, CTO and vice president of products for Next Issue, the exchange of files would be simplified, QA would only be needed once and the process could be automated.“Whether OpenEFT can do all this as it goes through its standardization process and tools and manufacturers come along and adopt, that’s all a big ‘TBD,’” he says. “But that’s the nirvana we’re looking for.”An open specification already exists, called ePub, but it was built to handle books, not magazines.“The orientation toward imagery, layout and the subtlety of the navigation of a magazine is something that’s evolved more,” Barraclough says. While Dianne Kennedy, vice president of emerging technologies for IDEAlliance, says OpenEFT is closely modeled after ePub, she adds that the need for tablet-optimized ad units is another major reason the book-centric format needed to be tweaked for digital magazines.Magazine staff have to manipulate the units from the agency, often without being exactly sure of how the final product was supposed to render. The costs and confusion make their use rare.“Magazines, unlike books, rely a lot on the ad model,” Kennedy says. “There is no specification for the exchange and rendering of this interactive content, so the magazines have been limiting the number of interactive ads they will accept.”Regardless of how or why they started with tablet editions, publishers will agree that improving production efficiency is beneficial. Now, it’s up to them to adopt the standard.

The pound dropped below the crucial $1.40 mark amid fears that the UK would vote to leave the European Union. Sterling fell as much as 10% early on Friday, and is on track for its worst one-day fall in history. Trading was at $1.3262, down nearly 9%, as of 5.27am BST.The pound, which had earlier hit a 2016 high as polls suggested the Remain camp would come through in the referendum, fell to lows not seen since 1981. Just before 5am BST, as various agencies began calling the referendum in favour of Leave, the pound slipped further to trade at 1.3322. Stock futures on the FTSE 100, which had ended the previous session up 1.23% were predicted to be down 8% as the vote swung Friday. Its extraordinary, said John Wraith, Head of UK Rates Strategy, UBS Investment Bank, Reuters reported. Shock probably isnt too strong a word. People will come in this morning earlier than usual, so its a skeleton staff right now. But shock was the first reaction. Now its all hands on deck trying to deal with the volatility, he said.Early Friday, the BBC, and other agencies, forecast that the UK had decided to leave the EU based on the analysis of pending undeclared counts.Markets are very nervy at the moment, Joe Rundle, head of trading at ETX Capital in London, told Reuters. Its definitely tin hats time. If Leave wins there will be carnage for cable, he said, referring to the sterling/dollar exchange rate.Elsewhere, the Nikkei 225 in Tokyo was trading down 6.73% while Hong Kongs Hang Seng was down 4.7% and the Shanghai Composite was down over 1%.Ahead of the EU referendum results, the pound was trading higher at $1.50, amid expectations that the Remain campaign would win. However, after votes in Sunderland and Newcastle swayed towards the Leave campaign, the sterling declined to $1.43. It further fell to $1.41 at about 2am.The pound then dropped below 1.35, a 31-year low, Bloomberg reported. A few traders said that they had not witnessed such dramatic moves since the financial crisis of 2008.Jeremy Cook, chief economist at World First, a UK-based foreign exchange company said, These moves are concerning and bring back pretty painful memories of 2008.The pound didnt have this bad a day [against the dollar] in the global financial crisis and the moves by the bookies to price Leave as the favourite is killing the pound. News from Wales is the most concerning at the moment alongside the London turnout dynamics.Analysts have warned that the drop was amplified by low trading volumes. Jeremy Stretch from CIBC said, Volumes are very low and markets are relatively illiquid. Traders are very jittery, its not just in sterling.
Vikram in Kadaram Kondan.PR HandoutRajesh M Selva desired to make Kadaram Kondan with Kamal Haasan, but the Ulaganayagan, in spite of being impressed with the script, could not take up the project due to his busy schedule. His liking towards the story became evident after the actor came forward to produce the flick, while roping in Vikram to play the lead role.Kadaram Kondan is an action thriller, which has Kamal’s daughter Akshara Haasan playing an important role. Abi Hassan, Lena, Vikas, Jasmine, Cherry and a host of actors are part of the supporting cast. The film has Ghibran’s music, Srinivas R Gutha’s cinematography and Praveen KL’s editing.Story: Chiyaan Vikram enacts the character named KK, who is on the run in Malaysia. He will be seen as a dangerous man with a murky past. There are complications in his appearance which makes him menacing and unpredictable person. Abhi and Akshara appear as husband and wife in Kadaram Kondan. How their lives and interlinked is the interesting part of the story.Analysis and Reviews:Kadaram Kondan is fast-paced action thriller which impresses the viewers with top notch technicalites. The brilliant action sequences are well-backed by pulsating background score. Vikram looks as stylish as ever in the crisp thriller in which Chiyaan has minimal dialogues. Akshara makes a good debut and Abi Haasan is equally impressive. On the flip side, there are lags in the screeplay here and there. Check out the viewers’ response to the film below:Kaushik LM: #KadaramKondan -Has a Thoongavanam vibe, with the Malaysian milieu setting it apart. Macho #ChiyaanVikram doesn’t have any romantic side to his character, and means ‘action’ all through with a hugely deep bass voice dubbing. He just eases through, sharing space with many actors #KadaramKondan 2nd half – High on stunts – bike chase, car chase, hand to hand combats etc. The ending is decent, with an emotional touch.. Overall, a lightweight action flick with a crisp runtime of 2 hrs. @GhibranOfficial’s work Competent debut for @AbiHassan_#KadaramKondan 1st half – So far, #ChiyaanVikram is akin to a caged, wounded tiger waiting to pounce.. Needless to add, he looks grt on screen with yet another new style trend to impress us. He is brooding and serious throughout – an easy cakewalk for the ‘actor’ in him.. #KadaramKondan 1st half – Takes all its time to set up the core characters. The mysterious KK & a young married couple drive the plot. ‘Thaarame Thaarame’ is a nice melody, sung by @sidsriram .. Debutant @AbiHassan_ ‘s screen presence is pleasing. Good debut for @AbiHassan_Review Ram: The stunt sequences in #KadaramKondan are well shot, but surely not well choreographed. They are in fact tedious. Doesn’t build any tension while watching…ZaZuOke: #KadaramKondan I thoroughly enjoyed that and with that being said as a non-tamil as an African Canadian #ChiyaanVikram is hands that with that performance the best Tamil industry has to offer such talent .. blown away just wow… Thank you so muchSidhu: #KadaramKondan: Crisp and progressive thriller that qualifies as a fair watch. #ChiyaanVikram is in his element and handles the film well along with @AbiHassan_ who is equally impressive. “Loan is way forward (infrastructure) development. Countries like US, China and Europe have taken loans for development of their infrastructure,” Prabhu said in an interview to Lok Sabha TV.Asked whether the government is going in for privatisation of railways in future, he explained: “We are taking debt for development of railways infrastructure, that means we are not doing privatisation. Besides there will be no burden of development on passenger fare as well as tax payers money.” Also Read – I-T issues 17-point checklist to trace unaccounted DeMO cashPrabhu expressed confidence that institutions like LIC (in India),pension funds and sovereign funds can provide debt and they will not insist on early repayment of loan. “The LIC, pension fund and sovereign wealth funds don’t insist on repayment of loans in short term, rather they want us to pay in over 30 years,” he added. On hitting the ground running, he quoted a famous saying, “Rome was not built in a day. There are few things which would be done this year like 3000 unmanned crossings will be removed and work will start immediately to improve cleanliness, safety, security and surveillance.” The Minister hinted that some initiative like train-sets, redesigning of coaches, doubling and tripling of rail lines, may take longer than expected to be implemented. On running of bullet trains in India, he said, “Our thrust would be on basic facilities first like sanitation, time bound arrival of trains which is going to be implemented in the stipulated time period. Those would be focus areas.” Also Read – Lanka launches ambitious tourism programme to woo Indian touristsOn private participation in railways, Prabhu said that there would be a system to regulate private sector players willing to invest in station development projects. On decentralisation of power to improve efficiency of railways, he said,”This will happen for the first time that more responsibility will be given to officers. It is not on Railway Minister or Railway Board which will do everything.” Earlier, in his Budget speech, Prabhu said: “We will monetise our assets rather than sell them”. On Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV), he said, “We have created new SPVs with the oil ministry, coal ministry… those will deliver. Rather than one entity, there will be multiple entities delivering.”
Swara Bhaskar, who has made her presence felt in the industry with Tanu Weds Manu and Raanjhanaa, is all set to push the boundaries again with Anarkali Aarawali.Swara plays a singer crooning double meaning songs in the journalist-turned-filmmaker Avinash Das’s movie.“Anarkali Aarawali is a challenging role because I play a singer who sings double meaning lewd songs and is very unapologetic about her sexuality. She considers herself an artist and her work an art. She is a foul mouthed and crass woman with fiery spirit. Also Read – A fresh blend of fame“But, she is still vulnerable in a volatile and violent world that sees women like her as mere objects. We also have to be as real as we can to the story and the context without becoming gimmicky or sleazy,” Swara said in an interview. The Prem Ratan Dhan Payo actor says not crossing the thin line between being sensual and sleazy was a tough task.“A script like this is a challenge because it’s the story of an orchestra singer from Bihar from the town called Aarah which very known for politics and crime.”“It is the story of Anarkali, who’s the small star of Aarah who sings double-meaning and lewd sort of songs in villages weddings or celebrations and how a certain incident happens with her and then her journey henceforth. It’s a brilliant script and a very challenging role.” Swara travelled to Aara to meet the local singers of the region and went through various diction workshops.
Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Entrepreneurs have abundant energy, drive, ambition, ideas and sweat. What they lack is time. That’s why they only have time for the advice they want.At the recent Accelerate Your Business event Entrepreneur held in partnership with Microsoft in Denver, it became clear that their interests rest under just a handful of key pillars.InspirationIt’s not easy being an entrepreneur. Normal people take a job, work and collect a paycheck. Entrepreneurs work under different priorities. They have an idea, a solution to a problem, and they work tirelessly to build products and services — all without the safety net of a sure paycheck and benefits. It can be heroic work, and it has a nine-in-10 chance of abject failure. What keeps them going? The inspiration of others. Hearing that someone as successful as Alexis Ohanian could have started his professional life with so much rejection helps entrepreneurs recognize that they’re not alone in the world and that their own setbacks don’t mean that their business is doomed.Sales and customer service.Your idea doesn’t turn into a business until you get your first customer. Plenty of people have good ideas. Fewer people act on them, and even fewer actually find a market for them. Getting advice on how to land that first sale, and, more importantly, how to convert that into repeat business, is some of the most sought-after guidance for entrepreneurs.Take building customer loyalty, an area of expertise of Carol Roth, the business expert and host of the TBS business show America’s Greatest Makers. Roth told the Accelerate event crowd that entrepreneurs need to develop long-term, loyal customers. In an approach she calls “Customer Loyalty 3.0,” she said the goal is to get raving fans to tell other customers about your brand or company. When you factor in the expense of trying to reach new customers and the high lifetime value of each individual customer, loyalty needs to be a top priority for every business.Data management and security.Every company nowadays, no matter what they do, says they are a “data” company. Yes, that’s a marketing hook, but it has a grain of truth in it. Every transaction, every interaction is recorded and stored. So every company collects and can use data. Here’s the good news: It’s easier than ever to use data to improve both your business and your customer experiences. Gene Marks, president of The Marks Group, which sells sales and marketing software, says the bad news is that bad actors get more sophisticated every day at trying to steal that data — and your business is liable. That’s made security a big concern for companies of all sizes. Watch Now: Run a Better Business Using Data Webinar with Gene MarksOn the bright side, it’s never been easier to store and secure that data. Jordan Chrysafidis, vice president of U.S. OEM at Microsoft, told the crowd that new cloud services really allow for a better mobile experience for business owners. As mobile becomes less about devices and more about the overall tech experience, having secure and easy-to-use cloud services becomes more important, Chrysafidis said.Gadgets.The devices we use to do business each day are increasing in capability as they decrease in size and weight. Kirk Godkin, a device evangelist for HP, often holds up a small phone and announces that this is the PC of today. Much of device development is designed for mobility, which shouldn’t come as a surprise since the workforce today are becoming increasingly mobile and virtual. Most entrepreneurs can’t get enough of new devices. The smaller, the better, provided they can also increase productivity.Behavior.Entrepreneurs, more than other groups of business leaders, are fascinated by what makes people tick. That desire is two-fold: First, understanding what drives customer decisions helps plot a sales strategy. In this regard, there are some ways in which our minds work in predictable ways, says Jon Levy, an expert in behavior and adventure, who also spoke at the Accelerate Your Business event. In fact, you can actually change people’s decisions simply through suggestion. “But with that great power comes great responsibility,” he said. It’s a dangerous line to cross to influence someone as opposed to manipulating them, he said.As for personal behavior, entrepreneurs devour any advice on how to personally find an edge. Whether it’s how often to sleep or how much exercise to get or even what habits to follow, entrepreneurs want any advice and guidance they can get to make them work more efficiently, think better and live smarter.Networking.Entrepreneurs want to connect, with customers, with vendors and with each other. For the first time, at the end of the recent Accelerate Your Business event, we held a Networking in Minutes event, where attendees were able to spend a few minutes with each other and presenters from the conference. Think of it as speed-dating meets networking. The feedback? There was a value in being able to interact with one another. To learn more about Entrepreneur’s upcoming events, visit https://www.entrepreneur.com/events. Register Now »
