South African classrooms go digital

first_img21 July 2015A teaching and learning programme to create paperless classrooms in 375 high schools would start rolling out today, said the Gauteng department of education. The programme is about combining and using a range of technology like interactive boards and mobile devices such as tablets and laptops with internet connectivity, to conduct teaching and learning. There will be unlimited data usage from 5am to 9pm.Empowerment and responsibility“A child of a domestic worker or a child of a gardener or a child of an unemployed parent will have a tablet in their hands,” Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi told Grade 12 pupils at the Grace Bible Church in Soweto. “Gone are the days where only those that are rich will have a quality education.”The top three students in their schools would also be given a four-year bursary, he said.“We are empowering you that when you finish your education and are given a form in a bank, and they ask you how much you earn, you will cancel that and say I don’t earn a salary, I pay salaries.”He warned that social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp would not be allowed on the devices. Pornography sites would also be blocked. “With every tablet, we will get an activity report which will show us which sites you visited,” he told the pupils. In numbers“The department has also purchased over 17 000 tablets for Grade 12 learners and 1 800 3D LED interactive boards that are currently being installed in matric classrooms at the targeted schools,” said the department.Over 4 000 classrooms were also re-furbished with new ceilings and specialised lights and blinds to cater for the lighting requirements of the interactive boards. The boards are integrated with the tablets to increase interaction between teachers and students during class.Security riskEarlier this year, tablets were recalled from schools. They needed to have additional security measures installed to stop theft of the devices.“The devices have been fitted with trackers to ensure that they are traceable should they get lost,” said the department. All schools were also linked to police stations to ensure rapid response.Lesufi said if a pupil’s device was being stolen, the student should not act like Rambo and fight the criminals. “Your life comes first.” In addition, if a matriculant did not return the device after the exams, the school would withhold the pupil’s results until it was returned.“This tablet belongs to government. not you. But you are allowed to take pictures with your friends and family.”The deadline for the completion of the renovations to the classrooms, mainly in schools in townships and rural areas, is the end of August.SAinfo reporterlast_img read more

Experience Cortland GeoTour (GT21)

first_imgECGT – Hannah’s Stump GC4320Y“Say yes or I jump!” Those could have been Hannah’s last words, but they weren’t. Isaac Bloomer dropped to his knee below the precipice over which Hannah’s stump leaned. Right then and there Isaac proposed marriage to save the poor girl’s life. At least that’s how the early 19th-century tale goes, and it very well may be true. Town records show that Hannah Towbridge of Gridley Hollow and Isaac Bloomer were married and likely lived an abundant pioneer farm life. Twentieth century locals embraced and reported the legend of Hannah’s Stump, as well as the good berry picking and camping that could be found at the base of the cliff and adjunct to the winding road and stream. The road was eventually straightened and the physical location of Hannah’s stump vanished to progress. Regardless, if a geocacher looks upstream through the new bridge and to the stone embankment, one might conjure up the essence of Hannah’s Stump.Hannah’s StumpECGT – Last One Room Schoolhouse GC433R1This scenic hamlet includes the original home of The Glen Haven School and Public Library. In the early days, a large resort hotel attracted visitors arriving on the southern end of Skaneateles Lake by steamboat.  The school was the last functioning one-room schoolhouse in Cortland County. Down the road and nearby this geocache one can find the Fair Haven Marina, the Glen Haven Inn, and some excellent fishing. Grout Brook, which flows into the south end of Skaneateles Lake, is a premier rainbow trout fishing spot, especially in early spring when trout head upstream to spawn. Bring a canoe, fishing pole, your curiosity, and perhaps dinner money to enjoy this “secret” hideaway.Last One Room SchoolhouseECGT – Field of Dreams GC43D18This geocache locale shares views of the town ball field, the local cemetery, old Route 26, town hall, and the vacant spot that was once the legendary landmark Brown Beaver Inn. Excellent fishing can be found nearby on the Otselic River. The Willet Ball Field grandstand was built in the early 1940s from salvaged lumber from the old icehouse at the former Reed Ice Cream Plant. The hunt for this geocache required climbing the actual grandstand. Field of DreamsECGT – The Crossroads GC5VDTKThe Crossroads is the location of the Town Hall, a lovely park with picnic tables, a basketball court, and a perfect old time swimming hole. Bring your swim gear (or not).Amish farmers can be seen on a summer day working the fields the way the original settlers would. They are the most recent immigrants to the area and are commonly seen riding their horses and buggies. If it’s laundry day, a drive down the road past one Amish farm will yield a wonderful display of dungarees of all sizes arranged by size on an endless clothesline.PrizesFind all 20 caches, fill in your map, and you earn an official Experience Cortland GeoTour hat and Cortland County pin! What geocachers are sayingWe knew so little of this region before the GeoTour, but now we feel like we’ve been in every nook and cranny of Cortland County. Great use of the space and resources. — Fur007Traveled to Cortland County do the Geotour. We really enjoyed this series and due to all of them being quick stop and grabs it was a great thing to do for the kids. It took us about 8 hours but that was our time with stops for visits, food, and gas along with a few other caches in the area. Due to us being there on a Sunday, most places to visit were closed but it also made for a very quiet/relaxing day. — 0;)Angel SharePrint RelatedInside Geocaching HQ Podcast Transcript (Episode 15): GeoToursJune 18, 2018In “Community”Cache 4 Coins GeoTour (GT6B)May 3, 2018In “GeoTours”West Bend Four Seasons GeoTourSeptember 18, 2015In “GeoTours” The Experience Cortland GeoTour started in 2012 and is still popular among geocachers today.
