Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Major League Baseball players are infamous for trying strange practices to get out of hitting slumps. Not shaving, not showering, and trying to keep the routine they used when the bat was finding the ball. Grazers in part of Ohio typically have a period of time called the “summer slump,” usually in late July and early August when hot and dry weather force cool season grasses into partial dormancy. Quite often we become like baseball players trying the same routine.Sometimes we as grass managers need to look to the bench and insert a pinch hitter into our forage lineup to help our cows keep up with nutritional demands. Enter Summer annual grasses, including Sudangrass.Sorghum × drummondii (Sudangrass), is a hybrid-derived species of grass raised for forage and grain native to tropical and subtropical regions of Eastern Africa. Sudangrass is smaller in plant architecture, has finer stalks, produces more leaves than forage sorghum and develops multiple tillers. Compared to forage or grain sorghums, sudangrass looks more like a “grass” plant. It possesses excellent re-growth ability with very quick recovery following cutting or grazing, compared to forage sorghum or sorghum-sudangrass hybrids. Total biomass tonnage for a single harvest generally will be less than yields of forage sorghum. Sudangrass is primarily utilized for grazing and hay production and can serve as an excellent cover crop. The new and improved varieties possess genes that makes them highly digestible and desirable to ruminant diets. This gene is referred to as a BMR-6, which stands for Brown Mid rib. The Brown Midrib-6 gene lowers the lignin content of plant leaves to improve digestibility and palatability. Most grazers are advised to have a sacrifice lot to bring cows in on when extreme weather conditions could damage our forage stands. Grazing either extremely wet or extremely dry pastures can cause long-term damage. For me it is a five-acre pasture adjacent to handling facilities and winter feed pads. When soil temperatures reach 60 degrees seed is planted with a no-till drill at a rate of 35 pounds per acre, an inch deep. Under favorable growing conditions, apply one to 1.25 pounds of nitrogen per day of planned growth. For example, for a planned 60-day harvest, apply 50 to 75 pounds of nitrogen.Grass is usually grazed 45 to 55 days after emergence. For best quality and yield under multiple-grazing, harvest at 40 days or 40 inches of growth, whichever comes first.Protein will decline as harvest is delayed. Energy will increase upon heading due to continued sugar formation in the stalks and leaves and carbohydrate deposition in the developing grain.Careful attention should be paid to the grazing height. To allow for rapid re-growth, leaving two nodes or six inches is optimal. You will see increased tillering of plants thus thickening up the stand for subsequent grazing. A note of caution: these plants can accumulate a chemical called Prussic acid following large nitrogen fertilizer applications followed by drought and following a killing frost. Grazing should be delayed at minimum seven days following a killing freeze later in the fall. The biggest and most important question you should ask me is: “What does it cost?”Seed costs $30 per acre and fertilizer at seeding (including 50 units of N) costs $50 per acre. You should also include a planting cost of $10 per acreI turned 56 mature bred fall calving cows into five acres on July 18, 41 days after planting. Cows grazed for three days. At 168 grazing days (56×3) and $90 per acre it comes to roughly 53 cents per cow per day.An additional 50 units of N was applied after the first grazing. The cows were grazed an additional five days during the second half of August. Regrowth was amazing during those hot days last summer, and the grass had tillered out and grown to about 16 to 18 inches 15 days post grazing. And, with only fertilizer costs for the second grazing needing to be considered, the cost for those additional five days of grazing came to less than 20 cents per cow per day. Unfortunately, near drought conditions in Pickaway County last fall prevented the opportunity for any additional grazing. So if you’re facing feeding winter feed stocks of hay during the summer slump or letting them “pick” your drought stressed pastures, may I suggest you consider putting summer annuals in your lineup. They are a home run!
A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… The WordPress.com network went down last week. In the wake of the outage, we started looking at what infrastructure WordPress.com uses to serve its 10 million blogs.WordPress.com is run from data centers in Chicago and San Antonio. Layered Technologies (LayeredTech) manages most of the WordPress.com infrastructure. According to LayeredTech materials, in 2005 WordPress.com had five servers. Today, LayeredTech manages about 1,000 servers for WordPress.com.WordPress.com founder Matt Mullenweg said in a blog post that a routing issue in the data center caused the outage. The cloud gets blamed for almost any online outage these days. It used to be that we’d just say the service went down and there was a failure at the host or the data center. Sure enough, the WordPress.com outage is not a cloud disaster. Instead, it’s what happens when failover does not work in a data center. According to Mullenweg, that’s what happened at WordPress.com: Related Posts Tags:#Analysis#cloud#cloud computing Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… “There was a latent misconfiguration, specifically a cable plugged someplace it shouldn’t have been, from a few months ago. Something called the spanning tree protocol kicked in and started trying to route all of our private network traffic to a public network over a link that was much too small and slow to handle even 10% of our traffic which caused high packet loss. This ‘sort of working’ state was much worse than if it had just gone down and confused our systems team and our failsafe systems. It is not clear yet why the misconfiguration bit us yesterday and not earlier.” We took a long look at the issue and still it bugged us that it is so vague about the differences between a data center network and a cloud computing environment. Well, Mullenweg is clear. We asked if WordPress.com is hosted through a traditional data center or if it is on a grid, which would qualify it in some respects as a cloud computing environment. He took our question and shot it right back. And in many ways, we think he is right:“That’s a silly question, like asking whether Facebook is a cloud computing environment,” Mullenweg said. Most ‘clouds’ besides Amazon’s are just marketing BS. WordPress.com is a collection of many physical servers across multiple datacenters to create a scalable, resilient environment for our customers. You could call it a grid, or cloud, we just call it service.”Cloud computing is over-hyped. No doubt. It’s interesting to hear this from someone like Mullenweg, who knows first hand the challenges of scaling. Who cares if it is cloud or not. It’s just cheaper to do it yourself at some point. Here’s how Mullenweg answered the rest of the questions we posed:RWW: WordPress.com uses traditional hosting. Why not use the cloud or does part of your service rely on a public cloud service?MM: We use cloud services where appropriate but always have a fall-back to local services. The best we’ve used is Amazon S3.RWW: I saw you present at Microsoft PDC about Windows Azure. Are you using Windows Azure? How?MM: We aren’t.RWW: Are you planning to move more of your service to a public cloud environment? Why? Why not?MM: No, in fact we’re going the other direction so we can have more control and lower our costs.RWW: But if it is a cloud, how could one router take it down? I saw your explanation but a clarification would be most helpful.MM: We have dozens of hardware and networking issues each week, and our system adapts and works around them so they’re invisible to users. This particular failure broke all of that. For an explanation of why, please check out my blog post on en.blog.wordpress.com.So, really what is the difference? There may be very little difference at all. The only distinction being that cloud computing remains difficult to define and sometimes is just marketing speak. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition filed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to review the apex court’s order, in which it agreed with the recommendations of the Justice (retd) RM Lodha Committee. The recommendations, when implemented, would bring more transparency to the cricketing body. The BCCI, led by president Anurag Thakur, has said that implementing the recommendations could spell more problems for the cricketing body, including its expulsion from the International Cricket Council (ICC).In an affidavit filed with the apex court on Monday, Thakur had said of his conversation with ICC President Shashank Manohar: “When he was president of BCCI, he had taken a view that the Lodha panel recommendations of appointing a nominee of the CAG on the board’s Apex Council would amount to governmental interference and might invoke an action of suspension from ICC,” Thakur had said. The Lodha panel recommendations, it may be noted, include barring ministers and civil servants as well as those above 70 years of age from becoming BCCI office bearers. If implemented, this could end political presence in the BCCI.The current BCCI president, Anurag Thakur, is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader. Former BCCI chief Sharad Pawar is the founder of Nationalist Congress Party. He is a former Union Cabinet minister and the former chief minister of Maharashtra. The BCCI has also contested the one-state-one-vote proposal, which limits the voting power of traditionally more influential states and their selectors; and a cooling off period in its review petition in the Supreme Court. If and when the recommendations are implemented, Thakur and many others could be on their way out of the BCCI. However, Thakur could land a role in the ICC, with sources saying that the world cricketing body is keen on giving Thakur the chairmanship role in its development committee. He will succeed Manohar.
