Aug 30 • Battling bot vacs: iRobot Roomba S9+ vs Neato Botvac D7 Connected Enlarge ImageLametric’s new color-changing LED wall panels are now available for preorder, and expected to ship by the end of this year. LaMetric Nanoleaf proved that there’s room for cloud-connected, color-changing LED lights on the walls of today’s smart homes, and it wasn’t long before Lifx followed suit with color-changing Lifx tiles of its own. Today, player three enters the game, with the mosaic-like LaMetric Sky now available for preorder.Enlarge ImageArrange the LaMetric Sky panels into a rectangle, and you’ll be able to use them to display notifications and social media counts. LaMetric Early-bird pricing ranges from $172 for a four-panel starter kit (25% off of the expected retail price of $229) to $576 for a starter kit with the maximum allowable 16 panels (that’s 30% off of the expected retail price of $823).First spotted this past January at CES, the triangular Sky light panels are the second smart home offering from LaMetric, a 6-year-old startup based out of Ukraine. With 32 triangular zones of light on each panel, the things are capable of displaying intricate designs and animations. Arrange your panels into a rectangular shape, and you’ll also be able to automate them to display pixel-based icons and text notifications from social media or other third-party services — the same approach taken by the company’s first gadget, the LaMetric Time. 7 Photos LaMetric’s pixelated LED wall panels shine at CES 2019 The pixel aesthetic lets the panels display a custom code during setup, too. You’ll scan that visual code with your phone’s camera to pair them with the LaMetric app. From there, you can sync them up with Siri, Alexa or Google Assistant to turn them on and off, adjust the brightness or trigger your favorite scenes using voice commands. LaMetric’s panels are a follow-up to the LaMetric Time (the desktop doodad beneath the computer monitor there). Arrange your panels into a rectangle, and you’ll be able to display the same custom text and icons as that device. LaMetric LaMetric’s panels are touch-sensitive, too — tap one once to change to the next effect, or tap it twice to turn the panel off.The segmented design also helps set LaMetric’s panels apart from Nanoleaf’s and Lifx’s. Nanoleaf’s panels, including a hexagon-shaped version due out later this year, can each only put out one color at a time — a sharp contrast with the 32 individual zones of light that you get with LaMetric.Meanwhile, you can use the Lifx app to fingerpaint on the 64 zones of light on each Lifx Tile, but the zones aren’t sectioned off from each other like LaMetric’s. As a result, the colors bleed together like tie-dye, which is less than ideal for displaying icons and formatted text. CNET Smart Home See All Post a comment Tags LaMetric also tells us that it’s updated the design since CES to allow users to connect panels side to side, corner to corner or corner to side via the cables hidden in the back. Lifx offers similar versatility, but the execution was a bit clumsy when we tested Lifx’s Tiles out. We’ll see if LaMetric manages a little better when the Sky panels arrive at the end of this year. Expect a full review from the walls of the CNET Smart Home when that time comes. Vikram in Kadaram Kondan.PR HandoutRajesh M Selva desired to make Kadaram Kondan with Kamal Haasan, but the Ulaganayagan, in spite of being impressed with the script, could not take up the project due to his busy schedule. His liking towards the story became evident after the actor came forward to produce the flick, while roping in Vikram to play the lead role.Kadaram Kondan is an action thriller, which has Kamal’s daughter Akshara Haasan playing an important role. Abi Hassan, Lena, Vikas, Jasmine, Cherry and a host of actors are part of the supporting cast. The film has Ghibran’s music, Srinivas R Gutha’s cinematography and Praveen KL’s editing.Story: Chiyaan Vikram enacts the character named KK, who is on the run in Malaysia. He will be seen as a dangerous man with a murky past. There are complications in his appearance which makes him menacing and unpredictable person. Abhi and Akshara appear as husband and wife in Kadaram Kondan. How their lives and interlinked is the interesting part of the story.Analysis and Reviews:Kadaram Kondan is fast-paced action thriller which impresses the viewers with top notch technicalites. The brilliant action sequences are well-backed by pulsating background score. Vikram looks as stylish as ever in the crisp thriller in which Chiyaan has minimal dialogues. Akshara makes a good debut and Abi Haasan is equally impressive. On the flip side, there are lags in the screeplay here and there. Check out the viewers’ response to the film below:Kaushik LM: #KadaramKondan -Has a Thoongavanam vibe, with the Malaysian milieu setting it apart. Macho #ChiyaanVikram doesn’t have any romantic side to his character, and means ‘action’ all through with a hugely deep bass voice dubbing. He just eases through, sharing space with many actors #KadaramKondan 2nd half – High on stunts – bike chase, car chase, hand to hand combats etc. The ending is decent, with an emotional touch.. Overall, a lightweight action flick with a crisp runtime of 2 hrs. @GhibranOfficial’s work Competent debut for @AbiHassan_#KadaramKondan 1st half – So far, #ChiyaanVikram is akin to a caged, wounded tiger waiting to pounce.. Needless to add, he looks grt on screen with yet another new style trend to impress us. He is brooding and serious throughout – an easy cakewalk for the ‘actor’ in him.. #KadaramKondan 1st half – Takes all its time to set up the core characters. The mysterious KK & a young married couple drive the plot. ‘Thaarame Thaarame’ is a nice melody, sung by @sidsriram .. Debutant @AbiHassan_ ‘s screen presence is pleasing. Hoping for an action packed 2nd! #KadaramKondan 1st half – So far, #ChiyaanVikram is akin to a caged, wounded tiger waiting to pounce.. Didn’t feel that it was his debut film. Proud moment for #Nasser @nasser_kameela #KadaramKondan Director has tried to give ‘A’ Class Action Thriller. Cinematography & BGM by @GhibranOfficial adds more value to the film. Slow paced screenplay. #ChiyanVikram Looks Vera Level. His action scenes in the second half has come out well. Good debut for @AbiHassan_Review Ram: The stunt sequences in #KadaramKondan are well shot, but surely not well choreographed. They are in fact tedious. Action is nothing but chases here in different forms like bike, car, walking and running. Doesn’t build any tension while watching…ZaZuOke: #KadaramKondan I thoroughly enjoyed that and with that being said as a non-tamil as an African Canadian #ChiyaanVikram is hands that with that performance the best Tamil industry has to offer such talent .. blown away just wow… Thank you so muchSidhu: #KadaramKondan: Crisp and progressive thriller that qualifies as a fair watch. #ChiyaanVikram is in his element and handles the film well along with @AbiHassan_ who is equally impressive. A recent article in North Carolina´s The News & Observer has highlighted a Raleigh-based company, Advanced Vehicle Research Center (AVRC), that has four employees and can retrofit a Prius in about four hours for a cost of $10,400. The AVRC is one of eight US companies authorized to install lithium ion batteries manufactured by 23 Systems, a Massachusetts company. AVRC´s converted Priuses can get from anywhere between 60 and 100 mpg, depending on driving habits, which roughly doubles the gas mileage of a standard Prius. Advanced Energy, a Raleigh nonprofit research organization and one of AVRC´s customers, has even exceeded 200 mpg in a test under optimal conditions. The conversion process is relatively uncomplicated. The mechanics remove the spare tire in the trunk, and replace it with a 170-pound lithium ion battery pack, like a much larger version of a cell phone battery. A plug from the back of the bumper can be inserted into a conventional wall outlet, where a full charge lasts about 3.5 hours and costs less than 75 cents. The modified Prius draws from the new battery first, giving the car a range of about 35 miles on all-electric power, making gasoline optional on short commutes. When the battery is depleted, the Prius runs like a standard hybrid, using its gas engine and regenerative braking to charge its nickel metal hydride battery.According to the Plug-In Hybrid Coalition of the Carolinas, there are about 150 plug-in hybrids on US roads today. Most of the AVRC´s customers have been corporations with large fleets, but they recently made their first conversion for an individual. Their clients include Progress Energy, Duke Energy, the city of Raleigh, and North Carolina State University´s Advanced Transportation Energy Center. These organizations are tracking and sending data on the cars to the Idaho National Laboratory, a federal research institute that is studying plug-in hybrids. The plug-in modifications aren´t authorized or endorsed by Toyota, which plans to make its own Prius plug-in commercially available in 2010 in the US. Also in 2010, Chevrolet plans to release the Volt (which runs on the same 23 lithium ion battery used by AVRC), which is expected to be more economical than AVRC´s conversions. The AVRC acknowledges that $10,400 is a hefty price tag for the average driver – AVRC founder and president Richard Dell estimates that it could take 140,000 miles to recover the cost through fuel savings. But the important thing is that they´ve demonstrated that the technology is viable and available right now. “It´s given us more confidence that it´s not a matter of if plug-in vehicles will happen, but when,” said Mike Rowand, Duke Energy´s director of advanced customer technologies.More information: The Advanced Vehicle Research Centervia: The News & Observer The Advanced Vehicle Research Center is converting Toyota Priuses into electric plug-in hybrids for a cost of $10,400. Image credit: The Advanced Vehicle Research Center. Although many people would like to drive more fuel-efficient vehicles, most of us have to wait for the large vehicle manufacturers to mass-produce affordable cars that run on alternative power. In the meantime, a handful of smaller companies have begun taking the energy crisis into their own hands. By retrofitting hybrids like the Toyota Prius with a second battery pack, they´re converting these cars into hybrid plug-ins that can recharge from a wall outlet and drive a short commute on all electric power.
