Prince Harry observed a moment’s silence for Fidel Castro as he attended a drinks reception in the Caribbean island of St Vincent. The Prince was put in the potentially awkward position on Saturday night by the Governor General of St Vincent, Sir Frederick Ballantyne, who is the Queen’s representative in the Commonwealth realm.Sir Frederick asked guests at the reception, jointly hosted by himself and the country’s Prime Minister, to observe a moment’s silence on the day the Communist dictator died aged 90.Ralph Gonsalves, the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines, said: “Castro was a good friend of the island.”He said Castro had invested in St Vincent, which had been a trading partner of Cuba for decades. In his address, Cuban President Raul Castro said his brother died at 10.29pm on Friday and would be cremated on Saturday before a period of national mourning is observed. He ended the announcement by shouting the revolutionary slogan: “Toward victory, always!”The news was followed by jubilant scenes in Miami’s Little Havana, home to thousands of Cuban emigres who fled in the decades after Castro’s forces toppled dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1959. Ramjattan was correct.Led by a power hungry Moses Nagamootoo, who wanted to taste executive power one last time before he dies and Raphael Trotman, who secretly formed a political pact with Mr. David Granger, years before in Nassau, Bahamas, Ramjattan was out maneuvered and the AFC and APNU solemnized their political matrimony on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2015, with the signing of the Cummingsburg Accord. An exuberant Nagamootoo promised the APNU that he would deliver 10% of the PPP’s constituency. Perhaps he did, I am not sure. What I am sure about is that in the succeeding 3 years, there is not a single decision or initiative for which he can take ownership that inured to the benefit to that segment of the electorate. To the contrary, one can identify innumerable examples to demonstrate that he led them blindfolded to the political slaughterhouse. From the moment the Cabinet was appointed, the miniaturization of Nagamootoo begun. He was denied a ministerial portfolio, including that of agriculture, which he was promised and which was given to an absolutely political unknown within the AFC. Under the Cummingsburg Accord, Nagamootoo was to Chair Cabinet. At the first meeting of Cabinet, the President made it absolutely clear that he will not cede that constitutional power to Nagamootoo. It was a political descent since.Even in the National Assembly, though he carries the portfolio “Leader of Government Business”, he bears no responsibility for any identified sector. Minister Joseph Harmon speaks for the Office of the President, and Chief Whip Amna Ally is the defacto “Leader of Government Business” in the House. His responsibilities is confined to seeking leave of the House to proceed beyond 10:00pm, when it is necessary and to indicate the date for the next sitting of the House – a date which is supplied to him by Amna Ally.Responsibilities for the Chronicle Newspapers and The Department of Public Information (DPI), two appreciably small departments within the executive governmental structure and which were assigned to Kwame McKoy in the PPP/C Administration, constitute the full extent of his ministerial portfolio. This moved veteran and respected Guyanese-born Caribbean journalist, Rickey Singh, to remark in an article in the Chronicle Newspapers that Nagamootoo enjoys the most miniaturized portfolio of a Prime Minister in the Anglophone Caribbean since independence. Singh was unceremoniously banished from the Chronicle after that article. His political sterility is best illustrated by the fact that he has been unable to assist the beleaguered sugar workers and embattled rice farmers, two sectors that were political battle fields in which he spent most of his life, in any manner whatsoever, as the Government of which he is the Prime Minister, unleashed a centrally orchestrated and concentrated onslaught against them for the past 3 years. His leader and political colleague, Khemraj Ramjattan, has fared no better. From the inception, the Ministry that he was given was first degutted of an appreciable compendium of functional responsibilities, which was hitherto part of the Ministry but were assigned to the PNC’s Winston Felix and physically migrated away from that Ministry to the Ministry of the Presidency. It is obvious that even with this limited portfolio Ramjattan does not have real handle over the Ministry. The President makes the more important decisions in this Ministry.Recall, Minister Ramjattan indicated in a letter to Commissioner Seelall Persaud that he (Ramjattan) was instructed by the President to send him (Seelall) on “Administrative Leave”. One would recall also Ramjattan’s plea of ignorance when former Chancellor Cecil Kennard was dismissed as Chairman of the Police Complaint’s Authority. Mr. Ramjattan was out of the country when Minister Felix, acting for him, sent Assistant Superintendent Mootie Dookie on “Administrative Leave”. Upon his return, though Mr. Ramjattan publicly expressed disagreement with Mr. Felix’s decision, he was powerless to change it. Minister Ramjattan played absolutely no role, whatsoever, in relation to two Commission of Inquires (COIs) done in respect of the Police Force.Mr. David Ramnarine is widely regarded as a supporter of the AFC and someone who enjoys the emphatic support of Mr. Ramjattan, yet Mr. Ramjattan was unable to stop, not only his non-appointment as Commissioner of Police, but also his humiliating removal from the top hierarchy of the Force. Only recently, Minister Ramjattan personally promised a retired Justice of Appeal that he would be appointed Chairman of the Police Complaint’s Authority. A few weeks later, a retired High Court Judge was appointed to that position and sworn in by the President. Ramjattan was not even seen at the swearing-in ceremony. The other political heavy weight in the AFC, Raphael Trotman, was stripped of his portfolio as Minister with responsibility for the very important oil and gas sector. The remaining portfolio, in relation to natural resources, is currently being shared with the controversial Simona Broomes, who seem to wield power over the mining sector. Indeed, one hardly ever hears from, or sees Trotman featuring in the press, in recent times.Although constricted, the above analysis demonstrates how powerless the AFC is in the Coalition Government, of which they are the second largest partner. Even at the level of the City Council of Georgetown, their Deputy Mayor, Sherrod Duncan, was booted out of the Council and his named successor was not even allowed to be nominated for the Mayorship. This demonstrable political impotence has led to a massive hemorrhaging of the AFC’s members and supporters. Recognizing this, the APNU has cruelly thrown it to the wolves by demanding that they contest the Local Government Elections on their own. APNU knowns that they would be devoured and that the AFC will be put to rest as an electoral force at these elections. If the population considers them rubberstamps now, just wait and see to what they will be reduced in the Coalition Government, post their electoral death at the 2018 Local Government Elections.
Terratec has launched a new rig to join its raise boring product line. The machine, called the Universal Boxhole Boring Machine – UB1000, is designed to boxhole sections up to 1.06 m in diameter and 100 m long; while it can also ream conventional raises nominally at 1.8 m diameter by 200 m deep. The design and production of the machine were entirely carried out in the company’s facilities in Tasmania, Australia. With this new Universal Borer, Terratec expects to cover the gap in the market in terms of safety, efficiency and fully automated box-holing machinery, for which the demand has increased significantly over the past few years in the mines in Australia and worldwide..” The machine brings into the maket innovative solutions to allow the safe and efficient execution of slots in the mines with a fully automated raise drill”, said the company. Terratec will be discussing this and other solutions in-depth at the forthcoming IM Rapid Development conference in Sydney on 15th and 16th August – see http://corporate.im-mining.com/imevents/Rapid-Development-2013.aspThe major features include the derrick assembly, including the gearbox complete with floating drive box (chuck), is suitable for a 10 in diameter by 48 in long drill string. The gearbox is designed so it can be positioned with the drive box pointing up for box-holes, or down for conventional raising. The machine is supplied complete with a gearbox turning cradle suitable to quickly and easily index from box hole mode to raise-bore mode in less than one shift. The integrated torque column/thrust cylinders provide balanced thrust and clear access from all sides. The rig is able to operate at up to a 45 degree dip, either side of centre-line, in a “cross-drift” orientation, with no requirement to turn the rig first, or any modifications to change from left hand to right hand dip.Powered overhead worktable doors with an integrated powered wrenching system ensure no man access is required at height. The machine also has an extendable muck chute for boxholing, with a door to allow 1.06 m diameter drill string components past. It also has integrated “stinger” cylinders and adjustable “spears” to help control vibration. An all-purpose ground-loading rod handler is included in the machine, which handles all drilling consumables, including the reamer and non-rotating stabilisers. The sled-mounted crane/conveyor with integrated operator station removes the muck to a skip bin location beyond the pipe loading area, and allows easy positioning of the reamer, non-rotating stabilisers etc around the drill.Drill rod feed cassettes are supplied and each holds ten rods. The cassettes are mechanised to feed one rod at a time to the rod handler, or accept one rod at a time from the pipe loader when removing rods from the machine. The feed cassette is powered from the hydraulic power unit. The hydraulic power unit and electrical cabinet are mounted on twin stackable sleds, with fire suppression fitted to both sleds. Full pressure and return filtration for each pump. It has a stainless steel operator control console complete with radio remote for selected functions; and ceramic-coated thrust cylinder rods for corrosion resistance. Transportation is via a radio-remote controlled transporter/erector crawler complete with 104 kW diesel motor and hydraulic system plus fire suppression system.
The International Tin Association reports that researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, US have demonstrated that a simple manufacturing route can be used to produce a tin-aluminium alloy that may be cheaper and double the charge capacity of today’s copper-graphite anodes for lithium-ion batteries. Some 50-70% tin is added to aluminium blocks in the casting process, creating an alloy that can then be mechanically rolled using conventional processes to make a foil. In the process, the tin particles are reduced to nanometer size, trapped inside the aluminium, stabilising them during charging cycles. The resulting material is one quarter as thick and half the weight of typical anodes. This two-step process is much simpler than the current technology for coating copper electrodes with graphite and doesn’t involve the typical complexities and scalability issues of nanomaterial development. It is also more energy efficient because there is less dilution of the energy capacity usually resulting from the extra weight of a copper backing foil. This new type of anode material has been named an Interdigitated Eutectic Alloy (IdEA) anode.“It is exciting to have developed an inexpensive, scalable process for making electrode nanomaterials,” said team leader Arumugam Manthiram, “Our results show that the material succeeds very well on the performance metrics needed to make a commercially viable advance in lithium-ion batteries.”At the same time the Association reports on liquid tin applications for concentrated solar power plants. A team at Georgia Institute of Technology, US has published advances in its development of liquid tin for use as a heat transfer agent in concentrated solar power (CSP) plants. CSP uses large-scale arrays of reflectors of different kinds to concentrate heat from sunlight onto a heat transfer system, for example in a tower, containing a fluid that can be circulated through a heat turbine to generate electricity.Tin can operate at higher temperatures than current systems based on molten salts or other fluids, increasing sunlight heat conversion efficiency to around 60%. Switching to tin from molten salts could decrease CSP costs by 30%. Together with partners from other US universities, the Georgia Institute team recently demonstrated suitable containment materials that don’t corrode and developed a ceramic pump that can be used to circulate the tin at up to 1,400°C.The ITRI view: “CSP costs are economically competitive with fossil fuels in sun-rich regions such as Africa, Australia, South America and the Middle East and some reports suggest that the technology could account for around 10% of global energy supply by 2050.”
The European Handball Federation made decision in case of Serbian player Nemanja Obradovic. The 26-years old left back signed contract with Orlen Wisla Plock, but his former team RK Metalurg Skopje put new deal on hold, with explanation that player has a valid contract until 2018.RK Metalurg demanded transfer fee for Obradovic 50.000 EUR, but it was clear that Poles aren’t ready to pay it.At the end, EHF Commission decided that Obradovic is free to sign for a new team. ← Previous Story TSV Hannover Burgdorf at the TOP – Flensburg lose in Leipzig! Rumors are swirling that Apple won’t launch the iPhone 5 until September this year, which gives Google some time to figure out how the heck they’re going to pull the two strands of Android back together, now that their mobile operating system has split into tablet and smartphone specific flavors. In the meantime, device manufacturers looking to upgrade their flagship phones need to stick with Gingerbread, and that’s just what HTC has done with their new flagship, the Sensation.Running Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread and driven by a dual-core Qualcomm MSM 8260 1.2GHz processor, the Sensation boasts a 4.3-inch SLCD touchscreen packing a 960 x 540 resolution: not quite Retina, but still vibrant and attractive. Connectivity is HSPA/WCDMA for cellular, 802.11b/g/n for WiFi and 3.0 for Bluetooth, while other specs include an 8 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video recording with stereo sound and HDMI out through the microUSB port with an adapter.AdChoices广告Design-wise, the Sensation is attractive, if unimpressive. Measuring in at just 11.33mm thick and weighing just 148 grams, the Sensation boasts a unibody aluminum design, as well as screen durability afforded by the always trustworthy Gorilla Glass. Other odds and ends include GPS/AGPS, a dual-LED flash on the back and the usual gyro, G-sensor, digital compass, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor.HTC’s been loading its smartphones with HTC Watch, the company’s movie and TV show rental system, and the Sensation is no exception. It’ll ship with over 600 titles available at launch: trailers of these films will be watchable over 3G, while the full movie will have to be streamed from WiFi. Once purchased, these films are stored in a cloud locker, which can be accessed from up to five HTC devices… but, lamely, not a PC.HTC’s also overhauled their Sense UI to take into account some of the lessons they learned building the HTC Flyer. The Sensation will be sold through T-Mobile USA as a 4G phone sometime in May or June. Pricing remains unannounced.More at SlashGear
