Time’s “Ten Ideas That Will Change the World” features HSPH faculty research

first_imgThe concept of the “demographic dividend” pioneered by Harvard School of Public Health faculty member David Bloom and colleagues is featured in Time magazine’s “Ten Ideas That Will Change the World,” published March 17.Bloom, Clarence James Gamble Professor of Economics and Demography and chair of the Department of Global Health and Population, and colleagues identified more than a decade ago the “demographic dividend” or “demographic transition” that occurs as countries transition from high rates of fertility and mortality — women having lots of children, many of whom die young — to low birthrates and longer life expectancies. In a country where this transition is taking place – thanks to improvements in health and other forces —  a bulge generation develops that, under the right circumstances, can fuel a strong economic transition as well.  Under the wrong circumstances, it can lead to civil upheaval.“At the start of the demographic transition,” Time notes, “women still have lots of children, but many more of those children survive into adulthood and old age. Only after a while do birthrates decline. And between those two moments not only do populations increase, but the average age of people also drops. You get a youth bulge.”A youth bulge can be a problem, if that growing generation of young people has limited education and economic opportunities, which in turn can breed unrest. But as Bloom’s research has suggested, many economies in East Asia in the 1980s and 1990s experienced significant growth that could be attributed to the demographic dividend, because educational, social, and government policies were in place to take advantage of the bulge generation’s numbers and potential economic productivity.last_img read more

Operating revenues and other income in 2017 ended at USD 615.8 million, compared to operating revenues and other income of USD 233.6 million in 2016. As explained, the main drivers of the record high revenues were the deliveries of three product tankers to Kinder Morgan, as well as continued progress on two containerships for Matson. In November 2017, the shipyard delivered the final vessel of a series of four product tankers to Kinder Morgan, as assignee of Philly Tankers. With this delivery, Philly Tankers divested all of its shipping assets and intends to initiates a liquidation process promptly, Philly Shipyard said.At the end of the fourth quarter of 2017, Philly Shipyard was building two containerships under contract with Matson. Checkout crazy requirements needed to join Mayweather’s ‘The Money Team’

first_imgA man of Floyd Mayweather’s wealth and status never travels solo but the requirements of being part of his entourage are pretty mental. As per a video from The Richest, in order to be part of Mayweather’s’ ‘The Money Team’ – one must go to extreme lengths to protect the 50-0 undefeated boxer and the upwards £250,000 sums of cash he regularly carries around with him when he’s out and about. Loading… As expected, the Irishman did not take too kindly to what happened when asked about the fracas. “Juicehead fools,” said McGregor, as per MMA Fighting. There’s also a meet-and-greet session at a budget Blackpool hotel, with £150 the fixed price to take a photo with Mayweather. FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 “I don’t know, man. I didn’t even see them until they were on top of me. I was like, ‘what?’ and then everybody was pushing and shoving. But, handbags, we call that back where I come from. It means it’s nothing, it’s just handbags. It’s just a term we use. “We’re having a good time, but I’ll tell you what, if those fucking juiceheads [do it again], I’ll slap the hell out of all of them. If something like that happens at the next one, something will have to happen.” ‘The Money Team’ are widely viewed as merely being Mayweather’s stooges but according to Rod Brasswell, who has been friends with McGregor since 1987, there’s much more to it. “It’s a collaboration of entrepreneurial minded people that are highly-educated with good common sense,” Braswell told the New York Post. “Floyd looks out for everybody and gives them an opportunity to go forward. Everybody is not meant to go forward, but he at least tries to put you in position to go forward.” In fact, it’s said that when Mayweather utters the words “sick them” – his bodyguards are expected to go on the attack. Mayweather memorably told his team to “Form Voltron” during a press conference with Conor McGregor ahead of their money-spinning boxing bout in 2020. The guards followed the command and promptly surround the Notorious with a scuffle ensuing on stage after McGregor’s team leapt to his defence.last_img read more

Decision in Kartel’s appeal delayed

first_imgThe Court of Appeal has reserved its decision in the challenge filed by incarcerated Jamaican dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and three others against their murder convictions and prison sentences. In court on Tuesday, President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Dennis Morrision gave no indication as to when the decision will be handed down.Priority attention After defense attorneys wrapped up their oral submissions, Morrison only said that the case will be given “some priority attention” and registrar will advise of the date when the judgement will be handed down.Morrison thanked the defense and the prosecution for the effort made in the case, adding that the case consists of more than 6,000 pages of transcripts and a large number of submissions.Contaminated evidence  During five days of submissions in the appeal that was heard before Justices Morrison, Frank Williams and Patrick Brooks, their lawyers argued that their right to a fair trial was prejudiced by several factors, including the admission of “contaminated” evidence during the 17-week murder trial.Among that “contaminated” evidence was a message lifted from Kartel’s BlackBerry phone –  “Between me and you a chop we chop up di bwoy Lizard fine fine and dash him weh.”However, prosecutors insist that the integrity of the evidence remained intact and urged the court to treat the message as an admission to murder.Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer; fellow dancehall artiste Shawn Storm, real name Shawn Campbell; Kahira Jones; and Andre St John are appealing their 2014 convictions and life sentences, for killing Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams in August 2011.last_img read more

I thought the situation was, there was a good chunk of the race left, it was pretty unnecessary. Probably wouldn’t have been as mad as I was about it if he didn’t about crash us in practice, which I thought was really unnecessary.“It’s all good and he’ll get his for sure.” Related News Bowman explained that his frustration with Logano goes beyond just the confrontations at Charlotte, though.“Just a couple situations throughout the course of the year and then in practice last Saturday and then Sunday in the race,” Bowman said. “It’s just like really uncalled for and unnecessary because I race him really clean. “When I say he’s going to get his, I’m not going to go wreck the guy. It’s I’m going to race him exactly how he races me. He can have those big saves up the race track or he can stand on the brakes not to wreck us both in the corner instead of me being the one to do it.“Shoot, I feel like I’ll have plenty of opportunities and I’m just going to be like the elephant and when it’s convenient for me, he’ll get it back.”Bowman and Logano will participate in qualifying Saturday at Pocono with the Pocono 400 set for Sunday at 2 p.m. ET (FS1).
